Mike Baker Memorial Fund
“We were honoured to have Mike as a trustee. He shared our objectives and appreciated our approach to working with able young people. His commitment to fair access and social mobility was so very strong and we greatly miss his wisdom and practical advice.”
Richard Gould, Chief Executive, Villiers Park Educational Trust
Mike Baker was an award-winning education journalist, author and broadcaster whom we were proud to have as a trustee for just over five years. Sadly, Mike passed away in September 2012 from cancer. Mike’s friends, family and colleagues established a Fund both to keep his memory alive and to continue the work he so strongly believed in. To date the Fund has raised over £41,000 to help less advantaged students with high academic ability participate in our educational activities.
Some of the funds are being used to support The Media Challenge courses for Year 12 Scholars. The courses are designed to help Scholars develop an appreciation of different types of media as well as its relevance and application in society. They also develop crucial independent learning and life skills including problem solving, decision making, critical questioning, research, teamwork, communication and presentation skills.
The Fund is also used to recognise and reward those Scholars that have demonstrated exemplary attainment, attitude, contribution, attendance and progress during the academic year.
