Villiers Park chair pays tribute to Gordon Marsden as he steps down from the charity’s board

Gordon is a former Shadow Minister for Higher Education, Further Education and Skills, and founded the independent Lifelong Learning Commission which has shaped Labour Party policy.

Commenting on Gordon’s retirement, Chair of Trustees Adrian Ball said:

“For many of us in the education sector, Gordon Marsden is synonymous with lifelong learning. Throughout his career, Gordon has worked tirelessly to open up education and training opportunities for young people across the country. Whilst I’m sad to see Gordon step down from our board, I’m sure his contribution to our cause will continue for many years to come”.

Gordon Marsden added:

“I’m proud as a trustee to have been engaged in developing and expanding Villiers Park’s programmes, widening our catchment areas for young people at crucial points in their future - to gain confidence, skills for life and paths to good jobs and careers.

“I‘ve admired and have been full of praise for our staff in our Villiers Park hubs, who go the extra mile supporting young people to gain confidence. It has been a privilege to speak to and see their enthusiasm and pride as they progress in our programmes.

“As I and my colleagues in the ‘Right to Learn’ campaign intensify our commitment to lifelong learning in education and skills at a crucial time, my hope is that Villiers Park will continue to battle for young people's life chances”

Gordon’s lifelong work education Gordon joined the Board of Trustees for Villiers Park Educational Trust board in 2020. First elected to Parliament in 1997, Gordon represented the Blackpool South constituency until 2019. In parliament, Gordon served as Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Lord Chancellor and two secretaries of state. Between 2010 and 2019 Gordon held a number of shadow ministerial positions responsible for issues including further education, higher education and skills. Away from the frontbench, Gordon has been a member of the House of Commons Innovation, Universities, Science & Skills Committee; and the Education & Skills Select Committee. He was Chair of the Associate Parliamentary Skills Group; and of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Veterans. He is a co-founder of the Right2Learn campaign having previously established and coordinated the independent Lifelong Learning Commission.
