Leadership Challenge in Swindon

Leadership Challenge projects are well under way for this academic year. Here is an update on the work going on in our Swindon hub.

At Lydiard Park Academy, our Year 10 Future Leaders are working on a number of different Leadership Challenge projects.

Eight Future Leaders are conducting projects with the Institute of Research in Schools (IRIS). Project topics include;

Wild Things: collecting data about the different insect species found on their school grounds.

Cosmic Mining: using satellite data to investigate stars forming and fading in the universe - requiring hours of analysis.

The Big Data: ATLAS: looking at data from the Hadron Collider to explore questions in particle physics.

After months of research, the IRIS projects are coming on tremendously as the Future Leaders put their findings into their posters.

A number of other projects, carefully thought out by our Future Leaders, include;

Social Club

An after school social club, run by students, that is open to all year groups. Reaghan, one of our Future Leaders, said that their motivation came from reflections on her purpose and values during coaching sessions. She is passionate about supporting others and making them feel happy. Reaghan is hoping that the after school club will be a place for people to come together, make new friends and play games.

Culture Talk

Ashok has produced a massive information board to share with fellow students on his heritage and culture. Ashok is passionate about this topic and wants to celebrate the diversity across his school. Over the coming weeks, Ashok has planned to deliver a talk to fellow Future Leaders.

Artemis II

With a love of Astrophysics, Ben has been researching and put together a brilliant poster all about the Artemis II rocket which recently launched astronauts into space before they travelled around the moon. This poster will now be shared with the school’s science department.

Careers in The Trades

As part of exploring his own Possible Selves, Aidan created a fantastic PowerPoint detailing different careers in the trades industry alongside required training routes and qualifications. He is now hoping to share this with the school’s careers teacher to support those interested in following one of the pathways researched.

Careers in Sports

Future Leaders Jayden and Karol share a great love of sports, especially rugby and football. This has inspired them to research some of the careers in the sports sector to help them and others in exploring the range of future options. The information will be presented via a poster and shared with the PE department.

Over at Cirencester College, Year 12s have also been conducting their Leadership Challenge projects. Three Future Leaders wanted to share what they have learnt from their first year in college with their previous secondary schools.

Introduction to A-Level Textiles

Sophie is planning a talk for younger students on the creative subjects she is take for A-Level, so they can understand the variety of subjects on offer and hear firsthand what it is like to study them at college.

Talk on College Life

Aanya will be returning to Lawn Manor to give a presentation to Year 10 pupils about life at college and what to expect from the transition of GCSEs to A-Levels.

Introduction to T-Levels

Norisha has been working alongside another Future Leader at New College Swindon to prepare a poster board about their different T-Levels to then share with younger pupils.

The Future Leaders at Lawn Manor Academy have come up with some fantastic ideas for their Leadership Challenge, developing projects that demonstrate teamwork, initiative, and a passion for causes that matter to them.

Science-themed Escape Room

Aesha has organised a science-themed escape room for one of the Year 9 science classes, creating an engaging opportunity for students to develop their scientific knowledge in a fun and interactive way.

Basketball Tournament

Chris and his team are planning a basketball tournament for Year 8 and Year 9 students to enjoy after school, while Nicole and her team are organising a netball event.

E-safety Awareness

Mangmaa and her team are producing a short film to raise awareness of the importance of e-safety and the impact of bullying.

The Future Leaders at Abbey Park have also developed some excellent ideas for their Leadership Challenge projects.

Community Flower Bed

Mya and Melissa have been involved in planting and maintaining a community flower bed outside the school, which serves as a tribute to Mya's mum and can be enjoyed by members of the local community.

Local History

Madison has designed an informative poster highlighting the history of Hilland, which will be showcased at the local festival. Meanwhile, Ben is creating a poster for Formula 1 enthusiasts, featuring key facts and information to help introduce newcomers to the sport and spark their interest in Formula 1.

The Future Leaders at New College have used their creativity and knowledge to develop some excellent ideas for their Leadership Challenge projects.

The Human Body

Keona is creating an interactive clay sculpture designed to help people learn about the human body and its various organs in an engaging and hands-on way.

Artificial Intelligence

Reece has chosen to develop a guidance website that explores both the benefits and limitations of artificial intelligence, helping others to gain a balanced understanding of this rapidly evolving technology.

Climate Change and Environmental Challenges

James is producing a short documentary focused on the importance of addressing climate change and raising awareness of the environmental challenges facing our world today.

We are so proud of all of our Future Leaders, across all of our hubs, for the hard work they are putting into their projects. It is fantastic to see the students applying their interests and skills to create projects that educate, inform, and inspire others.
