STEM Careers in Edinburgh
Last term we visited the University of Edinburgh with 21 Year 12 Future Leaders from Tyneside. It was an inspiring day that brought university study and STEM pathways to life.
The day began with an introduction to studying at Edinburgh from the Student Recruitment & Admissions team, followed by a panel of current STEM undergraduates, many from the North East, who shared their own journeys and experiences of transitioning from college to university. This was complemented by a Q&A where students were able to hear directly from staff and students about courses, applications and student life.
Students then explored the campus before visiting the impressive FloWave Ocean Energy Research Facility, where they saw cutting-edge technology in action and learned more about real-world applications of engineering and ocean science.
After lunch, research talks from an academic and a PhD student offered further insight into STEM pathways, highlighting how university study can lead to impactful and innovative careers.
The day concluded with a STEM challenge, where students worked in teams to design and build bridges capable of supporting weight, with an impressive five out of five teams successfully constructing their bridges.
Feedback from our Future Leaders show the impact of days like this:
“I am definitely thinking more seriously about applying to Edinburgh University, as I feel more confident about the uni itself after speaking to student ambassadors and staff.”
“I really enjoyed the activity of making the bridges today and thought that the sessions were very informative and insightful.”
